What Is A Subgenre?

Your guide to nuanced — flavored themes.

In film, a subgenre is a more specific flavor of storytelling that lives inside a larger genre like comedy, horror, or drama. Subgenres are defined by their distinct style and conventions. For example, both romantic comedies and slapstick cartoons fall under “comedy,” but they differ hugely in plot structure, dialogue, visual approach, and what kind of humor they’re chasing. Most genres contain tons of subgenres, many of which share traits and regularly overlap.
