Is "The Irishman" a True Story?
The short answer: sort of.
Frank Sheeran is a real person, and he was involved in organized crime. And shortly before his death in 2003, Sheeran did claim that he killed ex-Teamsters union boss Jimmy Hoffa. That claim has been disputed.
As of right now, no single person has been implicated or charged in Hoffa's disappearance. Neither has the boss's body been "recovered." In fact, no one has even publicly said exactly where Hoffa's body is buried -- if that's what happened. Officials only presume Hoffa was murdered and buried somewhere, but have no evidence. According to the FBI, the case remains open to this day.
On July 30, 1982 James Riddle Hoffa was declared "dead in absentia" at age 69.
