Small Soldiers (1998) — Read, Study & Download the Screenplay

Toy soldiers, corporate hubris, and suburban warfare with batteries included.

The Small Soldiers screenplay turns a toy-store fantasy into a sharp, chaotic satire about consumer culture, military branding, and technology nobody bothered to test before shipping. Adam Rifkin’s screenplay begins in ordinary suburbia, then lets corporate ambition, smart-chip engineering, and action-figure mythology collide until playtime becomes a full-blown neighborhood siege.

For writers and film students, this is a useful study in genre blending. The script mixes kid adventure, sci-fi comedy, corporate satire, and siege-movie mechanics without losing its commercial engine. Under the plastic armor and toy-store mayhem, Small Soldiers is about what happens when products are given purpose without wisdom, and when imagination gets hijacked by people who think “more explosions” is a business plan.

Small Soldiers Study Notes

What writers and film students can learn from this screenplay

By: Nick Runyeard

Small Soldiers is useful to study because it turns a toy concept into a full genre machine. The screenplay starts with familiar suburban comedy, then introduces corporate pressure, experimental technology, competing toy factions, and a kid protagonist caught between imagination and actual danger. The result is a story where play becomes war because the adults in charge confuse market research with wisdom.

Craft Focus

  • High-concept escalation: The script takes a simple “toys come alive” premise and steadily raises the stakes from product launch to neighborhood combat.
  • Corporate satire: The Marstech/Globotech material frames the chaos as a business failure before it becomes a physical threat, giving the comedy a sharper target.
  • Character through factions: The Commando Elite and the Gorgonites are not just toy lines. Their programmed identities create conflict, comedy, and theme.
  • Suburban siege structure: Ordinary spaces such as bedrooms, lawns, toy stores, kitchens, and vents become tactical battlegrounds once the toys begin rewriting the rules of play.

Questions for Writers

  • How does the opening suburban material establish Alan’s world before the toy chaos arrives?
  • How does the screenplay use corporate scenes to explain the premise while also satirizing the people responsible for it?
  • How does Archer’s relationship with Alan shift the story from toy gimmick to emotional adventure?
  • Where does the script turn comedy props into action beats, weapons, obstacles, or visual jokes?

While reading, pay attention to how Small Soldiers keeps converting innocent objects into story fuel. Toys become soldiers, packaging becomes mythology, vents become escape routes, household clutter becomes weaponry, and a quiet suburb becomes a plastic-bayonet war zone. The lesson for writers is clean and slightly singed: a strong premise gets more fun when every ordinary detail can suddenly become dangerous, ridiculous, or both.

One Sheet & Script Intel

Everything else is just a toy...including the unsuspecting suburbanites of Winslow Corners, who have somehow found themselves allied with the Commandos' sworn enemies: The Gorgonites. The monstrous-looking, but noble Gorgonites want only to hide from the Commandos long enough to find the lost island of Gorgon. Unfortunately, the Commando Elite is not interested in truces or negotiations...and they don't take prisoners.
