Despite not winning Best Screenplay, "Goodfellas" did win Joe Pesci an Academy Award in 1991 for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Also, the film was voted as one of the 100 greatest American films ever made by the American Film Institute (#92 as of 2025).

"Goodfellas" tells the true story of former Lucchese crime family mafioso-turned-FBI informant, Henry Hill (June 11, 1943 – June 12, 2012). Screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi and director Martin Scorsese adapted Pileggi's book, "Wiseguy".

Real-life FBI agent Edward A. McDonald, who turned Hill and entered him into the Witness Protection Program, played "himself" in the movie "Goodfellas." McDonald has since retired from the FBI and is now a criminal defense lawyer and actor based in New York City.
