Extraction (2020) — Read, Study & Download the Screenplay

A bruising rescue thriller where action becomes confession.

The Extraction screenplay follows Tyler Rake, a damaged mercenary hired to recover the kidnapped son of an imprisoned Indian drug lord from Dhaka. The premise is simple, almost brutally so: get the boy, cross the city, survive. But the script gives that simplicity emotional torque by making Tyler’s mission less about the job than the death wish underneath it. Ovi becomes more than cargo. He becomes the human obstacle between Tyler and the bullet Tyler may secretly want.

For writers, this screenplay is useful study material for action geography, survival plotting, character through violence, mission escalation, and the way a lean genre story can use physical exhaustion as emotional revelation.

Extraction Study Notes

What writers and film students can learn from this screenplay

Extraction is useful to study because it turns a simple rescue mission into a pressure-cooker action structure. The screenplay gives Tyler Rake one external objective: recover Ovi and get him out of Dhaka. But the internal objective is murkier and more interesting. Tyler is grieving, reckless, medicated, and half in love with the idea of dying usefully. Once the extraction collapses, every chase, fight, betrayal, and improvised escape forces him to decide whether Ovi is cargo, responsibility, or a second chance.

Craft Focus

  • Action geography: The script clearly orients the reader through bridges, alleys, rivers, rooftops, forests, apartment buildings, and city blockades. The chaos works because the geography stays readable.
  • Mission collapse: The extraction plan fails early, which forces the story out of procedure and into survival. That break is the engine: once the boat, payment, team, and trust are gone, Tyler has to improvise.
  • Character through tactics: Tyler’s violence is efficient, brutal, and almost numb. His combat style tells us he is trained, damaged, and not especially invested in self-preservation.
  • Mirror father figures: Tyler and Saju both fight for Ovi, but from different moral traps. Tyler is a stranger trying to save the boy. Saju is protecting his own family by risking someone else’s child.

Questions for Writers

  • How does the opening bridge sequence create a fatalistic frame before the story jumps back two days?
  • Where does the screenplay use Ovi’s vulnerability to reveal Tyler’s buried grief?
  • How does the one-shot-style chase sequence maintain momentum while constantly changing the physical problem?
  • How does Saju complicate the story by being both antagonist and protector?

While reading, pay attention to how Extraction keeps narrowing Tyler’s options. The clean job becomes a trap. The river exit fails. The city closes. The team is compromised. Allies die. Safe houses become unsafe. By the final bridge sequence, the screenplay has reduced the story to pure action math: distance, injury, ammunition, sacrifice, and a boy who must keep moving. The craft trick is that the emotional arc is hidden inside the logistics. Tyler’s redemption is not spoken into existence. It is measured in how far he is willing to carry Ovi after the mission stops making sense.
