Read. Study. Download. All of the stageplays at 8FLiX are free.

Before it became a movie it was a novel, and then a stageplay by Dale Wasserman.

For your consideration, we offer the 1971 stageplay version, revised from three to two acts and rewritten for a smaller cast. This version originally opened Off-Broadway at the Mercer-Hansberry Theatre on March 23, 1971, and played for two and a half years (1,025 performances).

It's free to read, study, and download, courtesy of 8FLiX and Concrd Theatricals.

Okay, now let's get to the goods!

Before the movie... there was the play.

It takes an army to make a production come to life. Now, meet one of the many talented 'soldiers' who made the "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" stageplay become a living-breathing thing.

Dale Wasserman was born in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, the child of Russian Jewish immigrants Samuel Wasserman and Bertha Paykel, and was orphaned at the age of nine. He lived in a state orphanage and with an older brother in South Dakota before he "hit the rails".

He later said, "I'm a self-educated hobo. My entire adolescence was spent as a hobo, riding the rails and alternately living on top of buildings on Spring Street in downtown Los Angeles. I regret never having received a formal education. But I did get a real education about human nature."
