Don't Worry Darling (2022) — Read, Study & Download the Screenplay

A retro nightmare about control, desire, performance, and the prison hidden inside a perfect life.

The Don’t Worry Darling screenplay follows Alice Chambers, a seemingly happy wife in the desert community of Oasis, whose flawless domestic routine begins to fracture after she encounters Margaret, a woman everyone dismisses as unstable. The script builds its mystery through contradictions: pleasure and surveillance, romance and ownership, luxury and restriction, beauty and bodily horror, devotion and obedience. Oasis looks like a dream because it has been designed to prevent certain people from waking up.

For writers, this screenplay is useful study material for psychological thriller structure, controlled world-building, gendered power, unreliable reality, visual motifs, and the way horror can grow from the rules everyone politely agrees not to question.

Don’t Worry Darling Study Notes

What writers and film students can learn from this screenplay

Don’t Worry Darling is useful to study because it makes repression look seductive before revealing the machinery underneath. The screenplay opens with Oasis selling itself as a sunlit private paradise: safe streets, glamorous parties, country-club leisure, perfect wives, satisfied husbands, and Frank’s soothing corporate gospel about the life everyone “deserves.” But Alice’s world keeps glitching. Margaret appears in the desert like a warning flare. Alice dreams in black-and-white choreography. Tremors shake the houses. Stores charge purchases to husbands’ accounts. Women know not to visit headquarters. The thriller engine is not just “what is Oasis?” It is “why does everyone keep helping the lie stay pretty?”

Craft Focus

  • Utopia as trap: Oasis is introduced through promotional language, manicured lawns, swimming pools, clubs, shopping, and domestic rituals. The setting sells pleasure while quietly mapping control.
  • Domestic routine as suspense: Alice’s cooking, cleaning, hand-washing, shopping, waiting, hosting, and sexual availability become thriller beats because the script lets repetition feel both comforting and coercive.
  • Visual motif as instability: Busby Berkeley dancers, black-and-white nightmares, screaming swim caps, severed roses, tremors, sharp knives, sutures, and perfect glass houses all suggest a world cracking under its own design.
  • Margaret as forbidden knowledge: Margaret is treated as unstable by the community, but structurally she functions as the first open wound in the Oasis fantasy: proof that someone has seen beyond the approved story.

Questions for Writers

  • How does the opening Oasis promotional sequence make the community attractive before it becomes sinister?
  • Where does Jack’s devotion to Alice feel romantic, and where does it begin to feel possessive or performative?
  • How does the screenplay use ordinary rules: shopping accounts, bus routes, parties, gender roles, and “don’t go to headquarters”, to build dread?
  • How does Frank’s language turn control into inspiration, and why does that make him more dangerous than a blunt villain?

While reading, pay attention to how Don’t Worry Darling keeps making Alice’s body the battleground. She falls from bed, cuts and sutures her own thumb, wakes while smothering herself, sees violent choreography in place of dreams, and is repeatedly asked to perform happiness as if performance were proof. The craft trick is that the mystery begins as atmosphere before it becomes plot. Oasis does not feel wrong because one clue says so. It feels wrong because every beautiful object has a rule attached, every rule has a man behind it, and every smile looks just a little too rehearsed.
