What Are Movie Genres?
There are 13 primary genres, and dozens of subgenres. Here’s what we have.
According to Dark, “Movie genres are categories that define films based on narrative or stylistic elements. The genre of a film can help determine the characters, setting, plot structure, and tone. Action films, for example, typically include fight scenes and slow-motion camera shots. Horror films often feature jump scares and have more action than dialogue.”

If you’re familiar with Netflix’s genre coding system, we use a similar approach. For instance, Netflix categorizes ‘action’ movies under the code: 100107. Our ‘action’ screenplays follow the same code: 100107! Check it out:
Action | Adventure | Comedy |
Drama | Fantasy | Horror |
Musical | Mystery | Romance |
Sci-Fi | Sports | Thriller |

There are dozens of subgenres, essentially the offspring of the ‘Primary 13.’
‘Rom-com,’ or ‘romantic comedy,’ is a classic example of a subgenre. ‘Mockumentary’ and ‘parody’ are two other subgenres branching off from the parent genre, ‘comedy.’ Explore our subgenre archives to find individual links to some of the most popular ones
