While not officially credited, director Scott Derrickson contributed to the screenplay for "The Day the Earth Stood Still," originally started by David Scarpa in 2005. Principal photography began on December 12, 2007, during the Writers Guild of America strike (November 5, 2007 – February 12, 2008). Due to strike regulations, Scarpa was not present on set for the majority of the shoot, as WGA guidelines prohibit writers from participating in production during labor actions."
