Parasite (Gisaengchung) (2019) Screenplay

Parasite (Gisaengchung) (2019) — Read, Study & Download the Screenplay

A class satire built like a home invasion, a con game, and a tragedy sharing the same staircase.

Parasite is a modern screenwriting blueprint because every comic setup eventually becomes structural violence. The Kim family’s semi-basement world introduces scarcity, improvisation, humiliation, and hustle before the script sends them uphill into the Park family’s architectural dream house. What begins as a tutoring scam expands into a full-family infiltration, then mutates into something darker when the house reveals another hidden economy beneath its clean surfaces.

For writers, this screenplay is essential study material for tonal control, class metaphor, architectural storytelling, ensemble plotting, visual motifs, and the brutal art of planting jokes that later bloom into horror.

Parasite Study Notes

What writers and film students can learn from this screenplay

The Parasite screenplay is useful to study because it disguises precision engineering as effortless chaos. The screenplay begins with the Kim family hunting for free Wi-Fi in their semi-basement, folding pizza boxes for scraps, and letting fumigation smoke roll through their home because even poison has value when you are poor. From there, the story climbs into the Park house, where every level, doorway, window, smell, and hidden room becomes part of the class system. The genius is not just the twist. It is how every comic scam, social performance, and tiny humiliation is planted to become catastrophe later.

Craft Focus

  • Architecture as story: The semi-basement, mansion, stairs, garden, garage, bunker, and flooding streets are not just locations. They are the class hierarchy made physical.
  • Tonal escalation: The script moves from farce to con movie, from con movie to thriller, from thriller to tragedy, without losing control of the emotional logic.
  • Setups with delayed violence: The viewing stone, peach allergy, smell, basement, Native American party theme, and rainstorm all begin as details or jokes before returning with sharper meaning.
  • Ensemble precision: Each Kim family member has a specific talent: Ki-Woo performs legitimacy, Ki-Jung improvises authority, Ki-Tek performs humility, and Chung-Sook brings blunt force. Their con works because their family dynamic is already a team sport.

Questions for Writers

  • How does the opening semi-basement sequence establish poverty, humor, family rhythm, and theme without lecturing?
  • Where does the screenplay make the Park family sympathetic, foolish, insulated, and complicit all at once?
  • How does the hidden bunker reframe the story without feeling like it belongs to a different movie?
  • How does the recurring idea of “crossing the line” build toward Ki-Tek’s final act?

While reading, pay attention to how Parasite turns metaphor into mechanics. “Upstairs” and “downstairs” are not abstract ideas here. Characters literally climb toward opportunity, hide beneath tables, descend into bunkers, run downhill through rain, and return to homes drowned by sewage. The craft trick is that the screenplay never stops being entertaining while it tightens the trap. Every laugh is doing load-bearing work. Every object is quietly sharpening a blade.
