Hubie Halloween (2020) — Read, Study & Download the Screenplay

A Halloween comedy built from kindness, bullying, fake scares, and industrial-strength soup thermos technology.

Hubie Halloween follows Hubie Dubois, Salem’s self-appointed Halloween safety monitor, as he tries to protect a town that mostly treats him like a walking prank target. The script gives Hubie a strong comic engine: he is gentle, earnest, terrified of everything, and somehow better prepared for disaster than every adult in Salem. Around him, the screenplay stacks escaped patients, werewolf misdirection, missing townspeople, bully payback, teen-party chaos, and a mother who may be more dangerous than every monster combined.

For writers, this screenplay is useful study material for broad comedy structure, running gags, seasonal world-building, comic mystery plotting, and the risks of building a story almost entirely around one character being mocked.

Hubie Halloween Study Notes

What writers and film students can learn from this screenplay

Hubie Halloween is useful to study because it shows both the strengths and limits of broad character comedy. The script gives Hubie a clear identity, a clear flaw, a clear emotional wound, and a clear seasonal mission: he wants to keep Salem safe on Halloween, even though Salem treats him like a public punching bag. That is a sturdy comic setup. The weaker craft choice is how often the screenplay returns to the same humiliation rhythm: Hubie is kind, someone insults him, something hits him, he misunderstands an obvious dirty phrase, and the scene moves on. It can be funny, but repetition without enough escalation starts to feel like a candy bowl full of only candy corn.

Craft Focus

  • Comic protagonist design: Hubie is instantly readable: earnest, fearful, civic-minded, socially clueless, and weirdly capable when his thermos arsenal is involved. The character engine is clean.
  • Seasonal world-building: Salem gives the script a strong playground. Halloween lets the story disguise danger as decoration, monsters as costumes, and genuine threats as harmless local weirdness.
  • Mystery through misdirection: Richie Hartman, Walter Lambert, the missing townspeople, and the werewolf material give the comedy a loose suspense spine. It is not elegant clockwork, but it keeps the night moving.
  • Running gag overload: The thermos, dirty thrift-store shirts, “Pubie,” jump scares, thrown objects, bodily-function jokes, and public humiliation all repeat heavily. The lesson: a running gag needs mutation, not just recurrence.

Questions for Writers

  • How does the script make Hubie sympathetic even while many scenes are designed around humiliating him?
  • Which running gags escalate, and which ones simply repeat until they lose comic voltage?
  • How does the Halloween setting help cover plot mechanics that might feel thinner in a less stylized comedy?
  • Does the final reveal involving Hubie’s mother deepen the story’s bullying theme, or does it mostly function as a late absurd twist?

While reading, pay attention to how Hubie Halloween uses kindness as both joke and theme. The script wants Hubie to be ridiculous, but it also wants him to be morally right. That tension is the movie’s best ingredient. The ending, where Hubie’s mother has tied his bullies to makeshift Salem-style burn piles and starts pouring gasoline around them, is outrageous but thematically direct: the town’s cruelty has consequences, even in a cartoon universe. The craft problem is that the screenplay spends so much time making Hubie the target that its “be kind” message has to sprint uphill in clown shoes. Still, the structure is teachable: give the fool a code, let everyone mock the code, then make the code save everyone.
