And, for your consideration, we offer his first draft from April 2001.
David S. Goyer's 2001 screenplay for "Ghost Rider" was an ambitious and darker take on the Marvel antihero, Johnny Blaze. Known for his work on Blade and Batman Begins, Goyer aimed to craft a film that delved deep into the horror elements of the Ghost Rider lore.
Let's dive a littler deeper.

Goyer's Vision: A Darker Ghost Rider.
Goyer's script was conceived as a modern-day Western with a hard-R rating, emphasizing the curse of the Ghost Rider and the horror of his transformation. The narrative centered on Johnny Blaze, who had been the Ghost Rider for some time, with his backstory revealed through dreams and oblique references rather than traditional flashbacks. This approach highlighted the mythic and serious tone Goyer intended for the film .
The screenplay opened with a vivid scene of a coyote traversing a desolate landscape, setting a somber and eerie mood. The story introduced Blaze as a rugged individual, already burdened by his curse, and delved into themes of fate, redemption, and the supernatural. The transformation into Ghost Rider was portrayed as a horrific and painful process, underscoring the character's torment and the gravity of his powers.
The Project's Fate.
Despite the compelling narrative, the studio was hesitant to proceed with such a dark and mature version of the character. As a result, Goyer's script was shelved, and the project eventually moved forward with a different creative team. The 2007 Ghost Rider film, directed by Mark Steven Johnson and starring Nicolas Cage, adopted a more PG-13 approach, focusing on action and visual effects over the darker themes Goyer had envisioned .
Interestingly, elements of Goyer's original script were later revisited in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011), where he contributed to the story. This sequel attempted to capture some of the darker tones and themes present in Goyer's initial vision .
