Context Matters. While the movie "1917" is a fictional story, it is partially inspired by stories told to writer/director Sam Mendes by his paternal grandfather, Lance Corporal Alfred H. Mendes, who served as a messenger in World War I. The film takes place after the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line during Operation Alberich.
