Want to Write Movie Scripts? Know What You’re Getting Into.
Thinking about becoming a screenwriter? Great! But let’s be real—turning it into a career is no easy feat. Writing is something anyone can do. But being a writer? That’s another story.
Screenwriting, like all art, is subjective. Which means feedback is, too. You could pay a script reader to review your work, only for them to rip it apart. Another reader might think it’s brilliant. The result? Conflicting advice that may not even touch on the core principles of storytelling.
That’s the challenge of seeking input in a field driven by personal opinion—not all feedback is useful, and not all readers are equal. So, what should you do? Keep writing. Keep revising. The only person who needs to love your script is you. If you’ve got the talent and dedication, success will come in time.
One more thing: read scripts. A lot of them. Study unproduced screenplays, Oscar winners, indie darlings—whatever you can get your hands on. Pay attention to what’s not written, the subtext between the lines, the rhythm of dialogue. That’s where the real magic happens.
Mistakes are part of the process—just know when to push forward and when to step back.
Anyone can write. But not everyone is a writer. The difference? Commitment.
