So, You Want to Write Movie Scripts? Do Your Homework.
Thinking about becoming a screenwriter? That’s fantastic—but let’s be honest, the odds aren’t exactly in your favor. Writing is one thing. Being a writer? That’s something else entirely.
Like any art form, screenwriting is subjective. So, is it really worth paying for someone’s opinion on your work? One script reader might hate everything about your screenplay, while another might praise it to the skies. The result? Conflicting advice on how to "improve" your writing—often based on personal preference rather than the fundamentals of storytelling.
That’s the challenge of seeking feedback in a subjective field. Not all opinions are created equal. The key? Keep writing. Keep revising. In the end, the only person who truly needs to believe in your script is you. If you have what it takes to be a good writer, the rest will follow.
And here’s something essential: read screenplays. Read as many as you can—unproduced scripts, award-winning scripts, indie gems, Hollywood blockbusters. Study what’s on the page, but more importantly, learn to see what’s not there. Look beyond the words to understand pacing, subtext, and structure.
Most importantly, don’t be afraid to make mistakes—but also know when to step back and move on.
Anyone can write. Not everyone can be a writer. The difference? Perseverance.
A word about voting... and other important stuff about the "best of" 2024 Unproduced Scripts.
Some of the scripts listed here may have since been optioned and produced. However, at the time of "voting" they were not.
Also, like all of the screenplays on this site, copyrights remain with the writer(s). 8FLiX does not claim ownership of any screenplay, nor were we involved in voting for, or choosing what makes them the "best of" a particular year.
If you're the writer and wish to update the version, change your contact information, or to remove your screenplay from the database, send me an email.
