But why, tho?
A common question I've heard on social media is, "Why kill off Alexei?" I can speak to my personal experience as a writer. So, the only answer I can give is: no one is safe anymore.
Some of you may not be old enough to remember a time when that kind of thing never happened in the movies. And, I'm going to sound like your dad, but here goes...
There was a era in Hollywood when popular characters were rarely, if ever, physically hurt let-alone killed! In the end, the bad guy always got caught and the hero would miraculously survive impossible odds.
TV and movies became boring. Predictable. Trite. Where's the fun in that?
By killing off a likeable character, a writer evokes a powerful emotion: hate. A writer can then skillfully manipulate what you're feeling to bring forward another powerful emotion that eclipses hate. Love.
And with that comes the only thing that is predictable in shows nowadays: one's insatiable desire to see what happens next. Because you just never know anymore.
