Part 1 of 3

Welcome!

You've discovered our stash of "Stranger Things" special events photos from season 1. Professional photographer Eric Charbonneau snapped many of these fantastic photos. I have about 112 pictures spread over three pages. This is the first page, and there's so much to see.

Here's what you can expect inside.

In this first part, we take you back to 2016. It is the red carpet world premiere of "Stranger Things". These great photos from the first season come courtesy of Netflix. Download and enjoy!. At the bottom of this page you'll notice a button that will take you to the next part. If you are having trouble downloading individual photos, scroll to the bottom for instructions.

Don't forget, you can also rotate your device to landscape mode and expand the images!

Wow! How things have changed.

So much has changed since 2016. First thing you probably noticed is how different everyone looks. I'm not talking only about their physical looks. Their fashion-sense has matured as well.

How to tell the Duffer brothers apart.

Having never met the brothers Duffer, I had to figure this one out myself. Matt Duffer is the one with the streak of silver hair in his bangs. And he usually parts his hair to his right. But what happens when they both have a head full of silver hair? Check back with me in a few years.

And what about the stage.

Earlier in 2019, David Harbour commented that 'hardly anyone' showed up for the 2016 premiere of "Stranger Things". You can certainly see that in these photos. But also notice the setting. Compared to season 3's World Premiere (which you can see here), this is a very basic set-up. Is it obvious that even Netflix wasn't too sure about how well "Stranger Things" would go over with its audience? I think so.

Who is that guy?

The gentleman you see on the far right of the picture above is Ted Sarandos. You'll see him in a lot of pictures and at many other Netflix events. Ted is the company's 'Chief Content Officer'. He's mainly responsible for spending Netflix's massive ($6B USD annually) budget for content.

There he is again.

Remember Ted Sarandos? If you're looking for someone at Netflix to thank for making "Stranger Things" possible, Ted's your guy. Likewise, if you need someone to blame for cancelling your favorite show, Ted's your guy!

That's Matthew Modine next to Hopper (David Harbour, actually). If you're under 25 you probably don't know that Matthew is known for more than just his work as Dr. Brenner on "Stranger Things". In fact, Matthew has more than 100 credits to his name in both TV and movies! Check out his IMDb page.

Shawn Levy.

Certainly, "Stranger Things" is a large part of Shawn's life, but did you also know that he produced an Academy Award winning movie? In 2017, 'Arrival', starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, was nominated for 8 Oscars including Best Picture. It won for Best Achievement in Sound Editing.

Relevant music is important, too.

The music adds a layer and is germane to the tone of the series in a way that Levy feels isn’t seen anywhere on TV.

It’s singular to the TV landscape. Our original music is all electronic. It’s extremely ambient and atmospheric.

But it will strike a familiar chord for those who grew up in the 80s, as it evokes the iconic sounds of electronic composers like 'Tangerine Dream', 'Vangelis', and 'John Carpenter'. The show is rounded out by an eclectic mix of classic popular music from the era, from 'Toto' to 'Joy Division' to 'Modern English.'

So vintage.

The sense of family and community is what strikes Natalia Dyer the most about the era.

The family eats together and it feels very different from modern-day families. There’s a nice innocence and sense of community.

And about the wardrobe ...

I love these clothes! The scrunchies, the shoes, the high-waisted jeans - it’s cool. Plus there’s this modern fascination with vintage things in general and I’m a fan of vintage, so it’s fun.

Yeah, so about that...

Levy explains about the wardrobe,

We wanted to tell a true story about the time in the 80s but we wanted to tell true stories of characters. And so whether it’s Dustin’s signature baseball cap, or Mike’s ugly beige parka - we wanted to say something about character through wardrobe choices. So it was about both historical accuracy and character honesty.

Finding the cast.

Center to the story is the boys’ quest to find their best friend who has gone missing. In casting the kids, Ross Duffer says,

There weren’t any other kids who could do these roles. These are the kids. We searched all over the world and auditioned thousands of young actors. Once we found our four main kids, they really inspired our writing and the characters.

For instance, Gaten does not yet have a front teeth due to a condition called Cleidocranial dysplasia, so the Duffers incorporated this into the character’s backstory.

Casting kids for major roles is akin to gambling.

Shawn Levy, executive producer and director agrees,

When you cast kids to play friends, you never know, it’s a crapshoot.

But he adds,

The process of making the show has bonded them so intensely and it’s completely evident on screen.

Finn Wolfhard describes the boys:

Mike, Lucas, Dustin and Will are these geeky kids who are in their own little world and they love to do stuff together like play video games and talk about nerdy science experiments.
