Rim of the World is directed by McG.

 

McG, whose given name is Joseph McGinty Nichol, is known for a few "Charlie's Angels" movies, "Terminator Salvation" (the one with Christian Bale) and "The Babysitter".

 

Shane Hurlbut, ASC., lensed Rim of the World. Shane is McG's "go to" cinematographer. They often work together.

 

Rim of the World is McG's third film for Netflix. The other two are: "The Babysitter" and "When We First Met."

 

Rim of the World is written by Zack Stentz. He also wrote "X-Men First Class" and "Thor."

 

The spoken language is English, with alternate audio-dubbing and subtitle languages available in English, French, Spanish, German and Italian. It may be a good idea to check local listings for more available language options (there are many).

Rim of the World is rated TV-14. No f-words but a few s-words. And some teen-typical poop and dick jokes. And, well, I'm immature enough to laugh at them.

 

...the story in short

Rim of the World is about four quirky teens who reluctantly accept the the duty of saving the world.

 

Their adventure begins in the mountains, at a campground for teens. Aliens have invaded the city below - save for one tenacious, six-legged pissed off space creature.

 

The stubborn sextuple-appendage arthropod won't stay dead. It hitched a ride through the atmosphere clinging to a runaway ISS escape vessel.

 

The creature (henceforth I will identify as he/him and when you see the movie you'll understand why) has a mission to complete. Whether or not it's personal is up to you! Is it to avenge the death of his beloved best friend? Or perhaps his orders are to stop humans from destroying the aliens? Whatever the case may be, he won't stop until mission accomplished. Think Terminator kind of stubborn.

 

Conflict arrises when his quest interferes with one of the kids' own undertaking. The teens have the key to saving the world - literally.

 

Alex, devoid of courage but wicked smart, is given a special "crypto-key" that contains valuable data. The device must be delivered to JPL headquarters in Pasadena, California, or everyone will die. No problem, right?

 

To get to JPL, our heroes, Alex, ZhenZhen, Dariush and Gabriel, must first overcome personal insecurities, past trauma, and that damn stubborn alien.

 

... not "just another alien invasion movie"

Google "alien invasion movie" and the result is no less than 51 titles at the top of the list. There are probably 100s more that we haven't heard of. Comparing Rim of the World to other alien invasion movies is like comparing one romance movie to every other "boy meets girl" movie out there.

 

... not Stranger Things

I wish people would stop comparing Rim of the World to Stranger Things. Kids riding bikes in a show or movie with aliens doesn't make something a Stranger Things. See above comment.

 

The story here does not take place in the 1980s. Even if it did, it still wouldn't be similar to Stranger Things.

 

... might be nostalgic for some adults

I say that because when I watched Rim of the World, I was taken back to when I was a kid. I remembered when we went exploring for monsters attacking our city. Naturally we won the battle, saved the world, and got home before the street lights came on. Those were the days.

 

... so what I'm saying is this

Rim of the World is a quick, fun binge.

Performances are compelling.

The script is good and the comedic elements are well timed.

The photography and directing are as you would expect from seasoned industry pros like Steve Hurlbut, ASC (Terminator Salvation, Act of Valor, Need for Speed) and McG.

The CGI works well and looks realistic enough for a modern sci-fi movie.

What's more awesome than a movie about kids saving the world from selfish aliens and certain doom?
