There's more to a script than just words.

Like the writers, for example! The "Das Boot" screenplay is written by Wolfgang Petersen. And, it's based on the novel by Lothar G. Buchheim.

For your consideration, we offer their final draft. It's a scanned copy of the original hand-typed English version, translated by J. Maxwell Brownjohn. Free, of course, from 8FLiX and Sony Pictures.

And, speaking of Buchheim's novel: we also have the digital version of the book available for download. Courtesy of, and © 1975, Alfred A. Knopf, Inc.

So glad you asked! Have a look at the movie's logline, and a quote from the screenplay.

It is 1942 and the German submarine fleet is heavily engaged in destroying English shipping. With better escorts of the Destroyer Class, however, German U-Boats have begun to take heavy losses. DAS BOOT is the story of one such U-Boat crew.

La Rochelle's out, I'm afraid. We've been given a new port of destination: La Spezia.

Wolfgang Petersen's adaptation of the Lothar G. Buchheim book, stands the test of time. It's just as thrilling and claustrophobic now as it was in 1981.

The "Das Boot" version we have was scanned in 2006. It's 180-pages, and a little hard to read -- too bad the print didn't age as well as the movie. However, the script is still a great read. Enjoy!
