‘Film Noir’ is more tone and style than a genre of filmmaking. Because of that, scripts under this subgenre may also include what we interpret to have a ‘noir-like’ tone.
‘Noir’ is similar to the ‘dark’ tone and subgenre and often compliments ‘crime’ movies. Cynical attitudes and motivations are emphasized, and rarely is there a ‘Hollywood ending.’ Some recent examples include Christopher Nolan’s ‘Batman’ movies, Sin City (2005), and Polar (2019). ‘Noir’ classics include Loophole (1954), and In a Lonely Place (1950) starring Humphrey Bogart.
