Bored with killing animals, 17-year-old James is busy plotting his first real murder when a brash new girl, Alyssa, catches him off guard at school.

One of the reasons why I subscribed to Netflix is so I can watch TV series not available anywhere else in North America. Shows like The Bridge and The End of the F***ing World only just begin to tap the wealth of great television coming out of Europe. It’s the Golden Age of TV in many countries around the world right now and I am glad to be a part of it as a viewer.

I binged The End of the F***ing World after reading about it in a Vice Tweet last night. It was just after 1:00am Saturday when I pressed play for Season 1, episode 1. I didn’t stop until it was over – it’s that good, and that short.

Season 1 has 8 episodes at 23 minutes (including credits) each; played back to back it's a little more than 2h 40min - that's less than 1997's Titanic (3h 14min); 2013's The Wolf of Wall Street (an even 3h); 1999's Magnolia (3h 8min); 1972's The Godfather (2h 55min); and less than about 25 other great films you wouldn't have a problem sitting through to the end.

The End of the F***ing World tells the story of James, a soon to be 18 year old boy who’s pretty certain he’s a psychopath (uhm, yep you’ll confirm that within the first 20 minutes), and Alyssa, also 17, the cool new girl at school. James is tired of killing animals for fun so he starts planning to kill something bigger, more exciting: humans. One day, when Alyssa unexpectedly shows a little interest in James, he believes he’s found the first of what will be many victims.

As his first day with Alyssa progresses, James slowly builds up the confidence he needs to commit his first murder – planning and fantasizing how, when and where he’ll slice Alyssa’s throat with the hunting knife he was gifted when he was 13-years-old. Unforeseen circumstances force James to keep reformatting his plans until, surprisingly, the perfect moment arrives when he must do what he has to do.

The End of the F***ing World is like nothing you’ve ever seen before. This is original, darkly funny, and highly entertaining. This new show will be a hit. It is great f***king TV. - Nick Runyeard
